Letter of the day: Torii will have to weigh Minnesota vs. money
Star Tribune baseball writer Joe Christensen wrote about how Torii Hunter is dealing with what might be his last season as a Minnesota Twin. It was a sympathetic article about Torii trying to not let his contract situation bother him and how he is dealing with the possibility of leaving the team that he has loved.Give me a break!
I am a big Torii fan and think he is a great asset to the team. But he has chosen this path and does not deserve sympathy. If he really wanted to stay all he would have to do is tell Twins General Manager Terry Ryan that he wants a five-year contract for $50 million, and he would probably get it.
This is not about a guy being forced out of his job at the Ford plant in St. Paul. This is about a guy who already has enough money to live in luxury for the rest of his life wanting more.
To put it in perspective, if a family made $100,000 per year it would take that family 100 years to earn what Torii would earn in one year.
No, Torii does not deserve our sympathy or our scorn. He is entitled to try to get $15 million a year, but it is his choice if he wants to place money over staying part of the team.

How cool is that. Letter of the day and with such a controverisal subject- baseball players salaries. Of course I know for a fact that he hates Torri Hunter and everthing he stands for, but thats neither here or there. I am glad the Philosopher Jeff came down on the right side on this issue. His glory is the Librarians glory. Way to go PJ.

JTL, thanks for the post. I find it pretty funny that with all the important news in the world that the Star Tribune would make a letter about Torii Hunter the "Letter of the Day", but I'll take the attention anyway.
Maybe for my next opinion submission I'll write about the proper way to wash a dog.
2 dingers and 7 RBI's later, the price just went to $18 million a year....
Prediction: Tori stays through 2011.
